Wednesday Wrant: Iceberg Lettuce

I’m one of those people that has no use for iceberg lettuce.  What is that stuff anyway?  I guess you can call it a leafy green, but it’s hardly even green.  It has this weird, white stem part that has this bitter flavor.  You get it right? I don’t like iceberg lettuce. So why is it that every single salad in the planet has to have iceberg lettuce in it? Ok, ok this may be a little bit of an exaggeration. Why is it that every single restaurant salad in the planet has to have iceberg lettuce in it? Ugg.

When I was preparing to write this rant, I decided to do a little research so that I could convince the world to stop using iceberg.  You know, because soooo many people read this. Haha. I did find the usual argument against iceberg. The standard argument saying that it is low in nutritional value.  But then I found this article from Raw Food Health that dashed my dreams of convincing everyone to stop using the nasty lettuce.  Dang it. It made some really good points.  Read it if you want to.

Or… You could join with me in ranting every time you have to pick one of those nasty, white, bitter stems out of your salad.  So who’s with me?  I say the only thing iceberg should be used for is this:

or this:

I also wanted to mention that my bff in real life, Johna, just started a blog.  In fact, this wrant was her idea. It’s called Made in Montana. You should check it out.

Ross Creek Cedars

When I went back to Eureka, Montana for the wedding, Johna, Steve, Elizabeth and I thought it would be a good idea to stop at Ross Creek Cedars to check out the giant trees.  It was really nice to stop for an afternoon walk, and the smell of the cedar forest alone made the detour worthwhile.

If you’re ever close to Troy, Montana, I recommend stopping.  It was gorgeous!

Go the F to Sleep

The least fun, and most irritating part of my job is naptime for the kids.  I would give anything to be able to wind down and take a nap after lunch, but they fight it.  With some of them, the more tired they get, the crazier they get because they’re trying to fight the sandman.  Well, when I was out shopping the other day, I ran across this little gem of a book:

book 001

I brought it to the preschool to show the other teachers, and we all agreed that it’s the perfect nap time book.  For the adult… not for the children… never for the children.

The illustrations in this book are actually really cool.  What’s even better though, are the words of the exasperated parent.  So funny.

This is my favorite page:

Bwahahaha… I love how it starts all nicey and sweet, and the last two lines say it like it is.  SO funny.

Revenge of the giant, pink, castle bouncy house

My nemesis was introduced to me on a Thursday.  It was a Thursday that was going to be like many other Thursdays throughout the summer.  It was the day of the giant, pink, castle bouncy house.  That first Thursday seemed innocent enough.  The kids were looking forward to jumping, that big pink castle was making my job a little easier, and the weather was sunny and clear.  I had no idea that several weeks later, the bouncy castle would turn on me.
(This is a similar picture of the pink bouncy house used at our preschool, not my actual nemesis.)

So there I was, on the last jumper Thursday of the summer, watching as seven of my students were frolicking, and bouncing happily inside the depths of the castle.  I decided that since it was the last jumper of the year, and since there were only seven kids inside the jumper that I would join them.  The kids thought it was hilarious… their grown teacher jumping around like a kid (you see, normally there are too many kids for me to keep my eye on all of them and jump at the same time). We were laughing, they were screaming happily, we didn’t have a care in the world.  Until suddenly, the ground gave way under my feet, and I was on my knees.  The happy screams of the children turned to screams of terror.  The walls and roof of the bouncy house came down around us, and all I could see was pink and mesh.

Don’t worry, I kept my wits about me, I stood up and I held up the ceiling of the jumper.  I gathered all of the students out of the pink tangle of vinyl, found the door, and helped them get safely outside. By this time, a coworker of mine was outside to stand with the kids until I could wiggle my butt through the door.  When I looked at the group of kids standing there, I expected to see tears and fear.  Instead they were looking at me with big smiles on their faces.  One of the kids said to me, “That was cool!” Another kid said, “Why did you do that Mrs. Karen?” Another one said, “Will you do that again?”  Who knew that a bouncy house collapsing around us would only make it that much more fun?

So at this point, the kids are out safely, and it is time to assess the damage to the pink castle.  It turns out that my huge ass had nothing to do with the castle falling down.  It was because of a zipper on the side of the jumper that was not actually zipped, just velcroed.  We zipped it back up, and the bouncy castle was reinflated in a matter of minutes.  Even after we showed the kids what had happened, they are all still convinced that I did it on purpose, and they want me to do it again. I wonder how many calls I’m going to get from parents?

As I gathered up another group of kids for the jumper, and I gathered up my pride, I could almost feel the bouncy castle laughing at me.  I don’t know why it waited until I was in there to deflate, but it probably has something to do with jealousy.  You see, I might be a chunky white girl, but I’m loved.  I don’t get used for a few hours, and then packed away without a second thought until it’s time to be used again.  I might feel sorry for the jumpy castle, except that it tried to take it’s revenge out on me.  So instead, I now have a new nemesis.  That castle better hope It’s nice to me next time, or it might find it’s self with a hole that it can’t just zip up. Don’t mess with me giant, pink bouncy castle!

Another Eureka Post: Pat’s House

Darn.  I just realized that I didn’t get any pictures of my friend Pat.  Well I did, but she was crossing her eyes and making a face.  I really want to post that picture, but I’ll be nice.  Instead I’m going to go steal one off of her Facebook page.

Robbery complete… Now you know who I’m talking about.
Anywho, when we went to Desirss’s wedding, Pat was kind enough to let Johna’s family and me stay with her for the weekend.  It was so nice, and so peaceful to stay out of town.  Drinking a beer on a hot day is never better that when your sitting outside, you’re with friends, and you can’t hear any city noise.  Ahhhh… Montana, how I miss you.

She also has some furry family members:

Did I mention, she is a horse woman through and through? This girl knows more about training horses than anyone else I know.  She taught me all kinds of things when I first met her back in jr. high and high school.

In case you’re having a problem, after using Pat’s bathroom, you will now know how to fix it in the future.  Her house is fun and educational.

Weekend Wedding

Yesterday I told you about going back to Eureka, Montana for Desiree’s wedding.  The night before the wedding, we went to Adam and Des’s house for the rehearsal bbq.  That night, we enjoyed good food, great conversation, and in true Montana fashion, we were treated to music around a bonfire later that night.

Adam sang a Garth Brooks song called Wrapped Up in You to Desiree, and he actually sounded a lot like him.  It was sweet.

The next day was wedding time.  It was an outdoor wedding, the scenery was gorgeous, and the weather was perfect.  A good time was had by all.

My friend Johna was there because Des is her cousin, and Johna’s daughter, Elizabeth was the flower girl.

Hometown Weekend

Over the weekend, I went back to my hometown of Eureka, Montana for a wedding.  My friend from high school, Desiree got married.  I will show you pictures of the wedding later, but for now, I want to show you how pretty good ol’ Eureka is.

I’d be lying if I said that going back there didn’t make me a little nostalgic and homesick.  It has the outdoor beauty of Coeur d’Alene without all the people.  I love it there. More pictures of my Montana trip coming your way shortly.
